My goal as an educator is to teach students to become critical thinkers who look at “the big picture.” Students will be able to make connections, understand cause and effect, and evaluate sources; rather than simply memorize and recite what the textbook says. By giving students ample opportunities to look at primary sources from the period we are studying, students gain a better understanding of the historical subject they are learning about. Students also do numerous hands-on activities and lessons such as, reenacting the Versailles Treaty, attempting to survive the Oregon Trail, analyzing the causes of the Civil War and, predicting the punishments under Hammurabi’s Code of Law.
Students in 6th grade study World History and students in 7th and 8th grade study American History. Civics and geography are incorporated into the curriculum for all grades. Students learn through a combination of project based learning, games, activities, gallery walks, and lectures.
