Welcome to fourth and fifth grade reading. Students in grade four are exposed to a variety of genres in an anthology textbook as well as several novel studies. In the fourth grade, students begin to analyze text structure, author's purpose, apply skills such as identifying main idea and key details, compare and contrast, and identifying the theme of a text. Students complete several projects that highlight their learning.
In the fifth grade reading classes, students continue to build on the skills that were introduced in the fourth grade with a variety of genres and novel studies. Added focus is placed on expository text and being able to identify text evidence to support findings. Students are introduced to latin and greek roots, and continue to expand their vocabulary knowledge. As a learning extension, students complete several choice projects that highlight character traits. Fifth grade students participate in a research project by selecting a positive role model they are interested in learning about. The project then entails reading a biography, writing a report about their person of interest, and recording a short video about their person.
